Understanding the Paint Finish on Your Wood-Burning Stove

The paint finish on a wood-burning stove is a crucial aspect of its overall appearance and durability. When the stove is manufactured, the paint is initially soft and requires a few firings to harden and cure completely. This process ensures that the paint adheres properly and provides a robust finish that can withstand the high temperatures generated by the stove.

All Panadero stoves come with an aerosol can of paint for this purpose.

Both we and the manufacturer consider blemishes to the paint finish to be repairable, and therefore, we do not offer exchanges or refunds for stoves with paint blemishes.

Paint Repair Instructions

Fortunately, any blemishes or imperfections in the paint finish can be easily addressed by following these straightforward instructions:

  1. Preparation: Begin by painting the entire panel where the damage is located. Use fine sandpaper to sand the paintwork, ensuring there are no raised edges between the blistered surface and the existing paint. This step is essential for achieving a smooth and even finish.

  2. Cleaning: After sanding, clean the surface thoroughly. Wipe it with mentholated spirit followed by a dry cloth to remove any dust or residue. This ensures that the new paint adheres properly.

  3. Masking: Protect any non-painted parts of the stove, such as the glass, handles, or hinges, by covering them. This prevents overspray and keeps these components clean.

  4. Spraying: Before spraying, ensure the paint can is at room temperature. Shake it for at least 2 minutes to mix the contents thoroughly. Test the spray on a piece of newspaper to get accustomed to the paint flow. Hold the can at least 10 inches away from the surface and apply 2-3 light coats over the affected area in a sweeping motion. This technique helps achieve an even application without drips.

  5. Final Touches: Allow the paint to dry completely before assessing the results. If necessary, apply additional paint after a couple of hours. The paint acts as a filler, so further thin coats can effectively cover any remaining imperfections. Although this process might seem extensive, it typically takes only about 5-10 minutes to complete.
